In World of Warcraft, everyone wants to be rich but nobody wants to work for it. It takes a crafty player to keep her pockets overflowing with gold but it can be done. There are many methods to keeping your coffers full. This article will talk about mob grinding.
What exactly is a mob? The word "mob" is the politically correct term for "monster". More than that, it simply refers to any entity that can be attacked and killed. That doesn't necessarily mean evil entities either since a player can kill neutral and even friendly forces. A mob can be any non-player character, a tree, an instance boss, a giant snake, a sand worm - basically anything that can have its hit points reduced to zero.
The higher the level of the mob, the greater the loot reward when you finally defeat it. However, the higher the level of the mob, the greater the risk to your character during combat. How do you find the optimum mob level to balance out risk versus reward?
Although you can certainly gather a group of friends together and enter any instance strictly to kill elite mobs, the payoff usually isn't worth it. Back before the expansions, there was one instance where such a strategy would work, and that was Zul Gurub (more commonly referred to as "ZG"). But those days are long gone. To grind mobs for profit, it's best to run solo.
Every mob has a chance to drop rare and epic items. There is a global loot table for those items although the drop rate is exceptionally low. But grinding for rare and epic items is not your best choice when grinding mobs.
Instead of hoping for rare and epic drops, you should to kill mobs for commodities; items that are commonly used by other player characters to complete quests, craft consumables, craft gear, etc. When it comes to grinding, commodities are your best bet for making steady cash.
Another great loot item is cold, hard cash: gold, silver, and copper. Certain mobs will drop money with every kill. Which mobs will always drop a little coin when you kill them? Humanoids, of course; animals and beasts don't have pockets!
The last item you should be looking for when killing mobs are non-binding quest items that can be resold on the auction house. Many such quest items are used for quest turn-ins in order to raise reputation with specific factions. Some of those quests require hundreds of items (some thousands) in order to reach exalted level with a particular faction. And believe me, there are plenty of players who insist on reaching exalted with every faction possible, even though their only reward is bragging rights!
So, we now know the three best items to look for in a mob: commodities, cash, and non-binding quest items. Since only humanoids drop cash, we know that we are looking for humanoid mobs. That narrows down the list of potential mobs considerably.
We're now looking for humanoids because they drop cash and we need to find a group of them that drops any type of commodity. Here is a great commodity to grind for: cloth! Almost all humanoids drop cloth of some sort, and because those tailors need it on a daily basis, cloth is an excellent choice for a commodity. A player can hunt down almost any humanoid mob and he or she will be sure to find cash and cloth, and the higher the level of mob, the better the cloth.
What about that third item: non-binding quest drops? I'll leave that last bit of research up to you. If you don't know where to look for such items, ask your friends!
