Online Poker Tells

Poker is a game of skill, observation, and anticipation. With out one of these three, you’re bankroll is gone, and so are you. Since the point to poker is to increase your bankroll, and come out on top of the game, more often than not, you need to learn to read tells. The greatest obstacle to reading tells these days are found at the virtual online poker table. The best players have learned some of the basic tells of an online player. This is needed to decide how real your opponents third King really is. As we go over some of the basic online tells, remember not every will play the same, thus no tell is anymore set in stone online or off. You still have to learn your opponent at the virtual poker table.

Identifying Online Tilt

Tilt – when a player allows their emotions to guide their play.

When a player goes tilt, they begin to bet more often and on poorer and poorer hands, in general they go from playing well to playing horridly. This can happen easily after a player has had a few excruciating losses at the felt. The big losses come together with a general loosing thought process, and they are on their way out of the game. Emotions, like chess, have no place at the poker table. If you tilt you might as well just throw the money away. If your opponent starts to show their losing hands, almost as if they are saying, but it was great, or they just can’t catch a break. Another obvious indication would be in the chat if they make annoyed or pointless chatter.

Taking Time to Decide

During pot limit or no limit games, if players take and extra amount of time to make a move, that often means that he or she has a negligible hand. However, being that everyone plays the game differently, it may be possible they were simply trying to decide what amount to bet. The bottom line is, a call after a delay implies a weaker hand, a raise or bet would denote a much better hand, or that they are being exceptionally bold and trying to bluff.

Auto-Button Use

In the online poker rooms auto buttons are made available to push the betting round through. They give you the option to fold, check, raise/bet for each hand, as soon as your turn comes around. Watch the other poker players to see if they are using htem. They are a fantastic indicator of their hand strength. Lets say some one auto raises your hand, it is evident that they have a strong, likely exceptionally strong, hand. It is less likely to find a regular player to be bluffing with the auto-raise button, although on rare occasions some of the better online poker players may chose to do this.

Strategic Position Raising

If there is a run of checks or calling across the table, but some one toward the betting round’s end, raises, it could mean that they are attempting to steal the pot. Watch them when this happens to see how often it happens, if you think they are pot-stealing raise them back. Should they call, their hand isn’t as confident in strength as he attempted to lead everyone to believe.
